Voltaire is the big name of the Enlightenment, but Du Chatelet was more than his equal - a she was a top-notch mathematician in a society which preferred illitterate women. While the book mainly tells the story of these fantastic people, it also gives an interesting insight into the distasteful workings of pre-revolutionary France.
