Inside the Tornado: Strategies for Developing, Leveraging, and Surviving Hypergrowth Markets

Geoffrey A. Moore

Notes:

Joel Spolsky mentioned this book in this excellent blog post: http://www.inc.com/magazine/20091101/does-slow-growth-equal-slow-death.html?partner=fogcreek

Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World

Liaquat Ahamed

Notes:

Received the FT/Goldman Sachs 2009 business book of the year award last week. Apparently it highlights the parallels between 1929 and 2008 and what happens when you combine easy credit with reckless bankers. Interesting addition to the "kreppuklám" collection.

Supercapitalism: The Transformation of Business, Democracy, and Everyday Life (Vintage)

Robert B. Reich

Notes:

Written before the government bailouts of 08-09 but interesting nevertheless. Mostly a demonstration of how lobbying effects public policy in the US. Not as boring as it sounds - but almost.

Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives the Economy, and Why It Matters for Global Capitalism

George A. Akerlof, Robert J. Shiller

Notes:

A friend recommended it, I heard Robert 'irrational exuberance' Schiller talk about it on the radio and it's shortlisted for the FT business book of the year. Officially on my to-do list.

Super Crunchers: Why Thinking-by-Numbers Is the New Way to Be Smart

Ian Ayres

Notes:

Continuing with the Freakonomics theme, I bought this book a while back because it had a positive blurb from S.D. Levitt! Everything you ever wanted to know about data-mining but were too afraid to ask. Not at all bad.

SuperFreakonomics: Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes, and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance

Steven D. Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner

Notes:

This might just be the first book I ever pre-order. The authors aren't afraid of controversy and it will be especially interesting to see whether their unorthodox chapter on global warming will cause a Lomborg-esque storm.

Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope

Nikki Grimes

Notes:

Here's a book the Nobel Committee has probably been reading recently. I came across it in a English bookshop in Paris, apparently run by Canadian hippies. I'm generally in favor of Obama and his administration, but a children's book describing him with god-like reference is still slightly strange.

What Would Google Do?

Jeff Jarvis

Notes:

In 2006 the Icelandic version would have been called "What would Kaupthing do" or even "Kaupthinking". Anyway, the book does have a chapter or two that are worth checking out but it reads a bit like a very long blog post.

Arnaldur Indridason

Notes:

I saw this "Reykjavik murder mystery" in Waterstone's yesterday (the UK's biggest bookshop) in a prime location. Maybe this is good news for the krona ...
